Life on campus
Hungappa created a space for discussion about life on campus in a regional town - at times confronting discussions around sexual assault and vandalism, and at other time a space for complaints and demands about housing and accommodation. As well as living on campus, Hungappa was used by venues on campus to promote gigs and events, and we have included a selection of the advertisements here.
Sexual Harrassment and Assault
The pages of student newspapers provide at times safe spaces for students (usually women) to both discuss their experience of sexual assault on campus, but also to raise awareness of the issues and occurrences:
"There have been a number of sexual assaults perpetrated on several female students once the beginning of semester, which have been reported to the police, and the administration of the colleges, which for reasons best know to themselves have decided to hush the incidents ups" (1989 Vol 1 No 9). In 1991 Hungappa published an article outlining women's rights "in light of the continuing sexual attacks happening on our campus" (Vol 3 No 17), raising issues of the role of the Campus Security service in 'protecting' women. Over time, the pages of Hungappa published official and student responses to the ongoing sexual assaults, and still in 2016 there were first person accounts being published of assaults, in the same year that Universities Australia launched its Respect. Now. Always. campaign.
Vandalism
Damage to University property was a hot topic through the 90s and 2000s on campus - telephones, toilets (often), road signs and all the other sites that could be construed as 'larrikinism' but through the Editorials and articles in Hugappa are analysed in terms of university budgets, respect and social norms.
Accommodation
Any on campus accommodation at any universty is a ripe site for discussion, complaints and reflection. In 2009 Hungappa published a 'heirarchy' (sic) of on campus accomodation in Wagga Wagga, when the CSU South Campus was still in operation (and ranked the highest!).
Advice on making the best of the accommodation also features regularly - tailored to each different option available to students on campus.
Campus Events
These excerpts are an example of the wide range of campus events and activities over the 30 years.
